Halfway through the week now. I've just gotten word that the job over in Cambridge is officially on the books, so it's just a matter of formally applying (which I did this morning), going over for an interview (which I'll probably do next week), and waiting the mandatory ten days for the position to stay open. I'm so excited at the prospect of working at Widener Library, which after the Library of Congress has the largest collection in the country, and one of the largest in the whole world. The fact that I'll be working in the Greek unit is just icing on the cake. I've been waiting for an opportunity to take my Modern Greek - both written and spoken - to the next level, and here it is, falling into my lap.
Speaking of things falling into my lap, did I mention that I just picked up a new student for the summer? I've been teaching her about 20 hours a week, which is perfect timing given the big upcoming transition from full-time to part-time paycheck. It's a little sobering to realize that I make more per hour as a tutor of Ancient Greek than I do at my day job, but maybe that can be a kind of inspiration to keep the ball rolling. I'd always told myself that if only I weren't tied down by the 9-to-5 grind, I'd hustle and find a way to make ends meet in a creative way that made better use of my talents and skills than this data-monkey position I've been doing since leaving school. And here we are; and it seems to be working, even!
