I want this book I want this book I want this book-
Author : Man, John.
Title : Atlas of the year 1000 / John Man.
Published : Cambridge, Mass. : Harvard University Press, 1999.
After lunch at Campo de' Fiori, my favorite pizza place in the universe (after Mack and Manco's down the Jersey Shore), I popped into the Harvard University Press Bookstore, which is right across the arcade from Campo, and browsed a bit. One of the featured books was this wonderful item by John Man. More than just a collection of maps, it is an around-the-world snapshot of what our planet was doing just a little over a millennium ago, from the pyramid city of Kahokia outside of modern day St. Louis to the Muslim Caliphate that sprawled across Eurasia and into North Africa and whose capital was Baghdad.
Speaking of Baghdad, I've finished the introduction to "Greek Thought, Arabic Culture" and I must say I'm eager to dive into the body of this book. The Classical Tradition is something near and dear to my heart, and the story of the transmission and translation of ancient texts is one I don't know nearly enough about outside of Renaissance Florence.
I think I'm going to have to create myself a wish list on Amazon. This isn't a hint or anything, but if anything a reminder to myself of what I want, need, or crave.
