Winding down

I'm almost through the last working Sunday of the fiscal year - forty minutes and counting. Will I be looking back on these past thirty-odd weekends of uninhibited reading, writing, and blogging with melancholy and longing? Almost definitely. But it's time for some change. Forces have been conspiring to keep me from moving on with my academic life for seven long years now, and now that I at last have the wherewithal to make some forward progress once again I would be a fool not to.

That I've found myself in jobs that were more or less ideally suited for blogging over the past two years of the Jersey Exile's existence has made all the difference for me. It was by blogging that I rediscovered how to write, a thousand words at a time. As I learned to fit my blogging into the nooks and crannies of my work day, so too did I figure out how to carve time for writing out of my nights. If not for this blog, I'm almost certain that I would still only be thinking about being a writer, and not sitting on top of four short stories (plus a fifth nearing completion) and three-quarters of a novel.

I doubt that I will end up abandoning this virtual home away from home entirely, but I do suspect that the amount of blogworthy material will decrease somewhat. However, I will try and redouble my efforts to post on weekdays (that is, when the baby can suffer my typing away on the laptop without slamming it closed onto my fingers!) - so while volume may in fact go down, frequency may end up going up. That's something at least, right?

Anyhow, thanks for all of the random hits and return readership. I hope you all stick around while I fumble through the next phase of my life...
