The long dark winter

Granted, we're at least a month away from our first sign of snow flurries and only two days into Autumn proper, but as soon as my hours here at the Circ Desk shift from my Summer and Intercession schedule to normal semester hours I can't help but feel a bit of a chill. Now when I leave work Friday evening at 7, it's dark outside. On Saturdays I get home barely in time for sunset. And Sundays... well, don't get me started about Sundays.

Don't get me wrong -- going back to my "normal" hours opens up oceans of time for me to do my readings for class, write my response papers, do research, keep up with my friends in Jersey and elsewhere, even blog. But for the past three Septembers it's been a rather melancholy ritual to watch my weekends evaporate as the Fall commences. Fortunately the panic from the realization that I've overcommitted myself for the semester once again keeps me from dwelling upon my fate for much longer than the first or second Saturday morning shift...
