Okay I think it works

Day Thirteen of the South Beach Diet and I've dropped at least a notch and a half on my belt. My pants keep falling down! The crazy thing is that most of the time I'm not even hungry. Not only are the meals on this diet reasonably large and filling(and even healthy if you go heavy on the vegetables), but South Beach encourages you to eat something every couple of hours or so -- punctuating the customary dreariness between regular mealtimes while dieting with nuts, a piece of cheese, or some hummus and raw broccoli. Now that my initial junk food jones has gone, I could keep this regimen up more or less indefinitely.

I'm seriously digging the salads these days, especially since a lot of restaurants are now combining their entree protein directly with a salad instead of serving it separately with a starch on the side. Fortunately my all-time favorite meal at Pho Pasteur -- the "Combination Salad" -- is perfectly compatible with the South Beach Diet. It's a pile of thin-sliced cabbage, carrots, cucumbers, peppers, chicken, and shrimp, topped with a sprinkling of crushed peanuts and a Vietnamese dressing of lime juice and fish sauce.

If I'm to believe my mother-in-law's bathroom scale, I was pushing 260 pounds just a couple of months ago. This morning I weighed in just a hair about 230! My goal is to stick with the rather strict first phase of the diet until I've gotten myself under 200, at which point I'll ease up and let some of the good carbs back into my life -- that is, provided that the next couple of weeks go as well as these first couple have. One of my best friends is getting married in three weeks, so I thought I'd stick with Phase One until then if I can. It would be nice to go to a festive occasion without feeling like I'm going to pop out of my formalware...
