It's all come down to this (again): the Red Sox and the Yankees in a three-game slugfest to determine who will capture the AL East title. After an opening performance that left New Englanders more than a little jittery, David Wells managed to settle down and pitch his astonishing fifteenth win of the season with the help of some clutch relief pitching by Chad Bradford and Mike Timlin in the later innings, the Sox holding on to a 5-3 lead to take the first of three and pull even with the hated Yanks in the official standings. Now it's anyone's series. The Sox need to win all three to avoid a one-game playoff -- not an impossible feat, given Boston's legendary four game come-from-behind during last year's American League Championship Series, but considering how hot New York has been over the past few weeks it might just be so much wishful thinking.
Fortunately we members of Red Sox Nation are a faithful lot...
(Game 2 is this afternoon at 1:20pm -- Randy Johnson vs. Tim Wakefield. This one's the gauntlet. If the Sox can prevail against the newly-resurgent Big Unit, then I give them better than even odds of making the clean sweep. If not, well, we'll cross that bridge when we get to it!)
