Looks like 2004 is going to be a good summer for Greek sports. The obvious reason for that is the Olympic Games, which will return to Athens after more than a century in August. The other reason, of no less life-or-death importance to the Greeks, is the 2004 UEFA Cup, which will be held in Portugal next July and very well might have Greece as a contender. Right now the Greeks at the top of their qualifying group - ahead of Spain by one point! - with only one match (versus Northern Ireland) left to be played. If they can win it, they automatically advance to the tourney regardless of whether Spain itself winds or loses; if they tie or lose, however, and Spain wins, they will need to compete in a playoff round with the other nine second-place teams to determine which five advance. Καλη τυχη, Greece!
