Note to self:

don't take the 8 o'clock train to Salem on Halloween Night. Hoo boy! I had completely forgotten that my normal sleepy Friday evening route home to the North Shore was going to be overrun by hordes upon hordes of costumed revelers on their way to the latter-day capital of Halloween. This phenomenon has really mushroomed in recent years; I remember when I first came to live in Boston that going to Salem for October 31st seemed like a cool thing to do, but it wasn't the monster event that it has now become. Traffic snarls for miles, the trains are packed and running almost an hour late, and downtown Salem is choked with pedestrians dressed as devils, kitty cats, and Spongebob Squarepants (Spongebob Squarepantses?).

It'll be fun to take the little one around town next year, when she's old enough to appreciate all the hooplah, but as for last night, wow, I just should have locked myself in the Modern Greek office and stayed in the library for the night! Well at least when I finally did get home, we were able to watch "It's the Great Pumpkin, Charlie Brown", which we have on tape. So it wasn't a total washout...
