Seven hours -

that's how much more time I'm obligated to work this year. One seven-hour shift at the Widener Circ Desk tomorrow and I'm looking at twelve uninterrupted days of holiday cheer. I haven't had this much time off in one sitting since the baby was born, and back then I was a little too frazzled and sleep-deprived to stop and smell the roses (ah, the joys of fatherhood!). I'm not exactly sure what I'll do with this embarassment of leisure. It would be great if I could get around to editing "Keeper", which has languished in its first draft far longer than its brethren; and then after that I'd like to do the final edits for the other stories as well. Seeing that one of my New Year's resolutions is to get published in 2004, it's about time that I stopped avoiding the inevitable and started accumulating those rejection letters. Because if there's any universal truth I've gleaned from writers writing about writing, it's that you don't get anywhere without getting rejected. Hmm. Now I remember why I've been dragging my feet about this part of the process!

At any rate, I'm looking forward to my time off. I have a few books from the Widener stacks I've been accumulating for a rainy day (or a twelve-day vacation), including that two-volume Introduction to Sanskrit that taunts me every morning when I see it sitting on the dining room bookshelf. If nothing else, I'd love to learn the Devanagari script over the break, as at least then I could sound out the words. I can save translation for Spring Break...
