A busy afternoon
at the Circ Desk, made all the more tiring by the fact that I'm fighting off a cold. I actually started to lose my voice in the middle of the week as the virus heralded its arrival, and after stupidly trucking on through my Tuesday night classes (as well as a two-hour meeting about Professor Sophocles that I chaired) I awoke on Wednesday morning to find that I had no voice whatsoever. It's making its way back in stages - whereas yesterday it was a gasping croak, today it's gravelly and husky in a way that's almost inappropriate for a public service desk money such as myself. Assuming I don't get into any shouting matches with the patrons over the weekend, I should be sounding like me again soon enough, but it's weird to be reminded every once in a while as to how important the faculty of speech actually is to us on a moment-to-moment basis. Especially when you're trying to order a dozen original glazed Krispy Kremes in a crowded donut shop! Fortunately that particular crisis was averted on Wednesday by an attentive cashier probably used to reading lips over the cacophony, allowing me, my coworkers, and ultimately my wife to enjoy our first Krispy Kremes fried up right here in Boston at the Prudential Center. Delish.
