Spread the love

Vertigo Comics (a division of DC) has made the first issue of their critically acclaimed sci-fi title Y: The Last Man available online as a free PDF download. If you've never heard of this comic, it tells the story of Yorick, the sole male survivor of a mysterious plague which kills every other male living creature (save for his "helper" monkey Ampersand) and plunges the world into a postmodern Dark Age.

Befriended by a biologist with the potential key to the ailment and a secret agent in the service of the White House, Yorick must find a way to stay alive long enough to save the world and reunite with his girlfriend -- who was hiking through the Australian Outback when the shit hit the fan, natch -- dodging Israeli commandos, high-tech ninjas, and latter-day Amazons who now terrorize the American countryside as best he can. By all means check it out!

Salon had an excellent review of Y: The Last Man back in 2003, including an excerpt of one its best scenes, when Yorick (disguised in a gas mask) and a stranger mourn the passing of the Rolling Stones, The Who, Neil Young, Tom Waits... even "The Motherfucking D". I think that's when I first heard about this series, although I didn't get a chance to read it until I noticed volume one of the trade paperback in the Widener Stacks.
