South Beach update

Well after three weeks on Phase One of the South Beach Diet, I decided to move on and let some complex carbs back into my life (Phase Two allows whole grains and non-tropical fruits). Last night the wife and I had Mexican pizzas on tortillas made from whole grains and oat bran that were just as tasty as their white flour equivalents, and today for lunch I got myself a "Green Mountain" at Cardullo's -- turkey, cheddar, and sliced green apple -- served on 7 Grain bread. It's nice to have the carbs back. Now the trick is to keep avoiding the refined starches and sugars.

So far I've lost about thirty-two pounds, which is pretty staggering for three weeks. Now that I'm in Phase Two, however, the weight loss will happen much more gradually -- the book says a couple of pounds a week if you don't go crazy on the complex carbs. We shall see. But so far I have to say that I'm very pleased with the South Beach Diet. I have no desire to revert to my old eating habits, as I don't feel "deprived". And now that whole grains and fruit are back in the picture, keeping the diet from getting dull and repetitive should be a lot easier than the first few weeks.

I'm thinking of trying the SBD...do you recommend?

I definitely recommend it! My wife's ob/gyn suggested it, because she had a very positive experience with South Beach as well. I have to say it's been about four weeks on the diet and I don't even feel like I'm depriving myself at all. Granted, I'm in Phase Two now, which means you can have a moderate amount of complex carbs, but as far as diets go Phase One of South Beach is pretty darned easy to stick to (at least for me).

Best of luck to you, and thanks for stopping by!
